  • Success In Spain
  • With a couple of very good runs I took 1st place in the qualifying stage of this year's Pre World Championships in La Seu d'Urgell, Spain, placing me through as the last boat to go off in the semi-final. An excellent semi-final run put me in 2nd place behind double Olympic champion Tony Estanguet (FRA) by a narrow margin that I hoped to make up on my 2nd run. My final run didn't get off to a great start and it just didn't flow for me the whole way down the course – I was finding it a real battle to hold it together. Consequently my 2nd run was a bit down on my 1st run time, but still good enough to stay in the medals. On home water, Ander Elosegui (ESP) had put in a very impressively fast run (which he later told me was “perfect”) to move ahead of me and take the silver. Estanguet remained in gold medal position. Although disappointed with my final run performance, I was delighted to win another medal. This was our final competition before the Olympic games, so it's back to a final stint of training until the Olympic games canoe slalom starts on 11th August.
